A Legacy of Japanese Art and Storytelling

A man and a woman look intently at Japanese art

The ROM’s world-class Japanese collection and Japan’s storied Edo Period (1603–1868) captivated members of the Japanese business and cultural community, who gathered on April 12, 2016 for an exclusive look at some stunning, newly acquired ukiyo-e woodblock prints and a salon-style talk with leading experts.

“The ROM stewards the largest collection of Japanese art in Canada, a rich resource for international research and inspiring exhibitions,” says Asato Ikeda, Curator and Bishop White Postdoctoral Fellow of Japanese Art. “Audiences are engaging with these cultural artifacts through a year of special programming made possible by our generous donors.”

The ROM is grateful to the Consulate General of Japan in Toronto and the Bishop White Committee for their continuous support of the ROM’s Japanese initiatives as we share our remarkable collection of prints, paintings, books, kimonos, and armour with the public.

The ROM seeks to endow a permanent curatorial presence for Japanese art and culture as well as to digitize this incredible collection. To learn how you can help, please contact Katie McMillan at katiem@rom.on.ca or 416.586.5582.
