Curatorship of Canadian Art & Culture

Philanthropist Red Wilson establishes the permanently endowed ROM Curatorship of Canadian Art and Culture

Objects are the ultimate storytellers of ROM – giving us glimpses into endless worlds and helping us understand our own. But they wouldn’t be as meaningful to us without the expert curators who research, interpret and present them.

With the support of the Wilson Foundation and the Louise Hawley Stone Charitable Trust, a newly endowed position has been added to ROM’s list of permanent curators: The L.R. Wilson Curatorship of Canadian Art & Culture. And the first to hold the title is Dr. Arlene Gehmacher, an accomplished art historian who has held the role of Curator of Canadian Art & Culture since July 2000.

The curatorship is named for philanthropist Lynton R. (Red) Wilson, a longstanding ROM volunteer and patron, and Honorary Governor.

The Wilson Curatorship joins six other endowed curatorial roles, including the recently announced Hatch Curatorship of Indigenous Art & Culture, which supports ROM’s commitment to share the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

Through the power of philanthropy, these endowed positions will ensure that ROM’s collections and programs continue to inspire us now and forever through their stories, secrets and revelations. Visit rom.on.ca/support to find out how your ROM journey might continue through giving.
